CHAPTER SIX

"Move," Noble ordered. "Let me in."

The tellers scooted over to give him room. As soon as they took their hands away blood bubbled up and the old fellow dragged air into his lungs. Noble knelt and pressed two fingers against Henry's neck. "You were cutting off his air."

The bank manager, Franklin Cooper, had been returned to the conference room after opening the vault. Joe must have scared him pretty bad. He was pale and shaking.

His voice trembled. "He going to be alright?"

"Not unless we get him to a hospital fast." Noble tore open a gauze bandage, wadded it up and used it to plug the hole in Henry's gut. He winced and let out a noise that sounded like Ack! Noble was reminded of the peanuts comic strip. That's what Charlie Brown said when Lucy pulled the football away and Charlie went flat on his back.

Ack! Funny the things you think of when you're under stress. The gauze turned pink, then red. Blood immediately soaked through.

He covered the plug with two more bandages and medical tape then schooled the older teller on how much pressure should be placed on the wound. "You need to stop the bleeding but don't cut off his air. Got it?"

She nodded. A sheen of sweat covered her forehead.

Noble gave her a pat on the shoulder. "You're doing good."

He motioned to the younger teller. "When you get tired, let her take over. Let me know if he stops breathing."

"What are you going to do?" the younger teller wanted to know.

"I'm going to see about shutting down that signal jammer so we can get an ambulance for Henry."

Meat Head said, "How are you going to do that?"

Noble picked up the can of compressed air. "With this."

Meat Head looked around at the others. "Is this guy for real? How do you plan to shut down the signal jammer with compressed air?"

"Ever read warning labels?" Noble asked.

Meat Head made a face that said the last book he read was in high school.

"Turn it upside down and it sprays liquid nitrogen,"

Noble explained. "It should be enough to freeze the circuitry if I can get close enough to use it."

Meat Head scowled but the mocking tone drained from his voice. "How do you plan to do that?"

"Still working on that part," Noble admitted. He pointed to the wall. "What's on the other side?"

Franklin Cooper followed Noble's finger and said, "Our server and office supplies."

Noble sorted through the rest of his materials and formed a hasty plan. He took the lighter, medical tape and the AED HeartStart and looked around for something to carry it all. He nodded at the older teller's purse. "Can I borrow that?"

"It doesn't go with your outfit." She handed the purse over.

"I've always been a fashion victim," Noble told her. He dumped the contents of the purse and loaded his supplies inside.

"What are you going to do?" Cooper wanted to know.

"I need a postage stamp," Noble said.

Cooper pointed towards the front desks were the tellers had their tills.
